O's and Ketosis and dietary fat levels.

Hopefully the Western World have lost the "Fat Phobia" pushed upon us by the various heart foundations and we can now get on with the "real" levels of fat. With this in mind the following is a discussion of how fats are "beneficial" particually for O's.

O's function better in a mild state of ketosis. I have read articals that this relates to "high protein" diets. This is only partly true, and infact the most ketogenic macronutrient is fat (esp. the HB Olive oil and other monounsaturated fats). Only 10% of fats can be converted into glucose (the "enemy" of ketosis) while around 45% of proteins can be converted into glucose. Carbs (exept fibre) are all converted into glucose.

What this means is that consumption of fat at a higher level than previously thought may be more beneficial to O's than the common low fat diets. In fact, I prescribe diets to obese individuals that have around 120-140g of fat (or around 50% of the calories in the diet). This level of fats have lots of scientific evidence and more importantly years of clinical successes.

Thus, if your an O, don't just fob fat off and say "yeah, I get enought of it", why not strive to get optimal amounts and don't be scared of it. It won't make you fat.
